چکیده

The National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act of 2004 states that people have the right to clean air and a healthy environment. Residents of low-income settlements are exposed to high concentrations of indoor air pollution due to the burning of solid fuels such as low-grade coal and wood for space heating and cooking. Long term exposure leads to degradation in the quality of life experienced by the residents of these settlements. Measuring indoor air quality is typically done by implementing the use of portable and cost effective continuous monitoring instruments, such as those based on photometric (light scattering) technology. These instruments do, however, have uncertainties associated with the overestimation of particulate mass concentration. This paper focuses on evaluating the respirable PM4 mass concentration measurement within KwaDela, a low-income settlement in Mpumalanga located on the South African Highveld. This was done by comparing PM4 mass measurements from, both the DustTrak and SidePak, photometric monitoring instruments and a filter-based reference gravimetric method, as to obtain a photometric correction factor for each of the instruments. The study found that both the DustTrak and SidePak instruments significantly overestimate the particulate mass concentration. The DustTrak Model 8530 has a photometric calibration factor of 0.14 ± (0.09, 0.15) and the SidePak 0.24 ± (0.16, 0.30). When these calibration factors are applied to the initial data, there is a significant difference experienced in exposure to high levels of respirable particulate matter. Thus, these calibration factors assist in obtaining a more accurate representation of the exposure experienced within an indoor environment prone to the combustion of solid fuels.

Particulates and Silica Exposure at Stone Crushing Site

Stone crushing unit workers suffer from particulate matters and respirable silica at work and in their residents nearby. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the area and personal exposure concentration of respirable particulate matters and silica in workplaces and in surrounding villages. PM10, PM4 and PM2.5 were considered for unit area measurement and PM4 and PM2.5 were considered fo...

An evaluation of sharp cut cyclones for sampling diesel particulate matter aerosol in the presence of respirable dust.

Two prototype cyclones were the subjects of a comparative research campaign with a diesel particulate matter sampler (DPMS) that consists of a respirable cyclone combined with a downstream impactor. The DPMS is currently used in mining environments to separate dust from the diesel particulate matter and to avoid interferences in the analysis of integrated samples and direct-reading monitoring i...

Particulate matter exposure during domestic work in Nepal.

AIMS To measure particulate matter (PM) exposure of people involved in domestic work (i.e. housework by a resident, not paid work) in urban and rural Nepal, with exposure to biomass smoke in the rural areas, and to examine the performance of photometric devices in collecting these data. This paper details the results of these measurements and derives calibration factors for two photometric devi...

Airborne Particulate Matter Density in Traditional Bakeries of Saveh, Central of Iran, in 2020

Introduction: High concentration of inhalable airborne particles can increase the risk of lung disease in exposed people. This study aimed to determine the respirable particulate matter (PM5) concentration in traditional bakeries of Saveh in 2020. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 25 bakeries where the samples were collected by cyclone and teflon...

Comparison Analysis of Particulate Matters in a Micro Environment

Different approaches of source apportionment of dust fractions have been reported world-over. Predicting source categories within receptor chemical profiles using regression and factor analysis using PCA has been reported to evaluate possible source/routes of air pollution mass. The present study is focused on the application of all three approaches to investigate higher degrees of significance...
